Congress, Tino’s remain undefeated in Iron Range softball
ISHPEMING — Congress Pizzas and Tino’s fended off challenges by the narrowest of margins to keep the top spots after Week 6 in the Iron Range Women’s Softball League on Wednesday.
Congress Pizzas pulled out a 12-11 nailbiter over Barrel + Beam to hold onto to the top spot in Class A.
Courtney Caliguri and Katie Rankinen each went 3 for 3 for Congress, which improved to 6-0. Ellie Miller and Stacie Kruse both were 3 for 4 and Tia Mattila was credited with great plays at shortstop for B+B, which is now 5-1.
In Class B, Tino’s remained undefeated at 6-0 with a 22-20 triumph over Quality Car Care, which shares the runner-up position with Signs Unlimited at 4-2.
The winners’ Lauri Saldana hit a grand slam homer, while teammate Kassy Antilla had a homer and double, Amber Forchini two doubles, and Randi Roose, Paige Willey and Sam Dymond each slapped a double.
QCC’s Katelyn Lammi hit a pair of homers, while Michelle Lammi was 4 for 5 and Joanna Smail and Lori Ring each had a double.
In other action in “A,” Tayler Gray went 3 for 3 and Bethany Suomi 2 for 3 with two RBIs as Pasquali’s pulled out a 7-6 win over LaCosse & Associates, whose Olivia Letson homered and had two RBIs while Jordan Kowalski was 3 for 4 with a triple.
Brittany Singer hit a triple and made two diving catches in the outfield to lead Jasper Ridge Brewery to a 17-12 decision over River Rock.
Teammate Taylor Oakland homered, while River Rock’s Kenzie Karki was 4 for 4 and Cooper Atkins and Alyssa Hill both hit a homer over the fence.
Jordann Lori, who went 5 for 5, and Loretta Willey each tripled while Macey Nault homered as Dave’s Collision-Jack’s Teepee posted a 23-8 victory over the Eagles, whose Laycee Mattson tripled and Makenze Gerding doubled.
Back in Class B, Katie Mitchell went 5 for 5 with a pair of doubles to lead Paradise Bar past Palomaki Family Chiropractic 22-6.
The winners’ Hailey Hytinen hit a homer, triple and double; Mel Barlow was 4 for 4 with a double; Kylie Tobias homered; and Rachel Hytinen and Kristi DeCaire each were 3 for 4 with double.
Katie Trudgeon paced Palomaki by going 3 for 4 as Val Prusi tripled and Sara Smith doubled.
Miranda Cobb and Chastity Hudson both were 3 for 4 as Willey’s Tire Shop wheeled out a 13-9 win over Signs Unlimited, whose Becca LaChapelle was 3 for 3 and Becky Gauthier 2 for 4 with a triple.
Jen Laurila went 4 for 4 to lead the Elks Lodge to a 16-13 triumph over Pineshears.
The Elks’ Jamie Bryan and Caylie Kangas each were 3 for 3, while Becky Lee doubled and Deanna Mingay was cited for solid defense on the mound.
Chelsey Wunder and Livvie Denofre each went 4 for 4 for Pineshears, Wunder hitting a pair of doubles and Denofre a triple as teammate Toni Tikkanen hit a homer and triple.
