MARQUETTE — A crescendo of awards await the student-athlete population at Northern Michigan University as 228 of them have been honored for academics in the GLIAC and with at-large honors included in conference awards, the league announced last week.

Most of NMU’s teams play in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the exceptions being hockey that plays in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, nordic skiing in the Central Collegiate Ski Association, women’s wrestling as an independent, and the non-NCAA sports of men’s and women’s alpine skiing and men’s Greco-Roman wrestling.

The CCHA handed out its own academic-based awards several months ago, while nordic skiing has been included with the GLIAC as at-large awards.

All the GLIAC awards, including at-large, are based on grade-point average as long as the student is not a freshman or first-year transfer and was on the team’s active roster at the end of its season.

The All-Academic Award goes to eligible student-athletes with GPAs between 3.00 and 3.49, while Academic Excellence goes to those with a GPA or 3.50 or higher.

This year’s 228 honoree total just exceeds NMU’s 2023-24 total, which was 225, and also beats out the 2022-23 number of 213 student-athletes honored.

For the current school year, the Wildcats had 85 earn All-Academic and 143 make it up to Academic Excellence.
