Waterman, Korsman set Miners’ track records

CALUMET — A pair of Negaunee girls broke school records as the Miners swept to girls and boys titles at the Calumet Invitational high school track and field meet held at Agassiz Field on Tuesday.

Sophomore Keira Waterman won four events at the meet, including her NHS-record 26.62 seconds in the 200-meter dash that gave her a nearly three-quarters-of-a-second victory in the event.

What had been a 48-year-old record was set in 1977 by Susan Garlick in 26.75 seconds.

And junior teammate Nori Korsman cleared a height of 9 feet, 8 inches in the pole vault to break a much more recent Negaunee record held by Aleda Johnson of 9-7. But Korsman only finished runner-up as Houghton’s Emilyn Fay won it after getting over the bar at 10-feet even.

The Miners won the girls meet by nearly doubling the point total of runner-up Houghton, scoring 193 points to 99 for the Gremlins. Kingsford was a distant third with 60, while L’Anse finished ninth with 14 and Baraga 10th with 6.

Negaunee also had a comfortable margin of victory in the boys meet, scoring 148 points to 124 for second-place Houghton and 122 for third-place Kingsford. Baraga was sixth with 14.

“A total of five school records have been broken by the Negaunee girls this season,” Miners girls head coach Vickie Paupore said in an email about the meet. “Over the past 30 years, I have coached all of the school record holders on the board, but I’ve never had five records broken in one season.

“I am amazed at what these girls have accomplished. Nearly every girl had a (personal record on Tuesday) and I feel like it will give them a lot of confidence going into the (MHSAA Upper Peninsula) Finals.”

Many of the Miners boys and girls will be joined by other regional-meet qualifiers from schools of all sizes across the U.P. at the Division 1, 2 and 3 finals to be held at the Kingsford football stadium at 10 a.m. EDT Saturday.

Waterman and Negaunee boys team member Brady Mager led their school as quadruple winners Tuesday.

Waterman paced a Miners’ 1-2-3 finish in the 200 as teammate Sadie Rogers was second in 27.34 seconds and Macyn DellAngelo was third.

Waterman also won the 400, long jump and ran a leg on the victorious 1,600 relay as Negaunee won 10 of the 17 girls’ events, including three of four relays.

Mager won four individual events as the Miners’ boys were triumphant in six events in all.

He won the 200 dash, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and high jump. Mager led a 1-2 finish in the 300 hurdles as Kyle Waterman was second in 42.25 seconds, while Mager paced a 1-3-4 finish in the 110 hurdles with Waterman third and Cole Pekrul fourth.

Negaunee’s other boys wins were by Derek McEachern in the 400 and the Miners’ 1,600 relay that also included McEachern.

Back in the girls meet, Rogers was a three-time winner, taking the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and running a leg of the victorious 400 relay.

DellAngelo added triumphs in the 100 and a leg of the 400 relay, teammate Adelyn Chapman took the 3,200 and ran a leg of the winning 3,200 relay, and Korsman also ran on the first-place 3,200 relay.

Riley Conklin was a multiple relay winner for the Miners, running legs of their victorious 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

And Negaunee’s Priya Morey had what must have been the closest near-miss of the day when she finished runner-up in the girls’ shot put by one inch, heaving it 29-8.25 compared to winner Fay’s 29-9.25, while NHS’ Paige O’Donnell was also third just 4.25 inches behind Morey.

For the Baraga County teams, Baraga and L’Anse had a trio of third-place finishes between them.

For the Vikings boys, Taven Lewis was third in the discus with a toss of 125-2.5 while he was fourth in the shot put with 43-1.5. And for the Baraga girls, Elisa Delene was third in the pole vault with 9-6.

The Purple Hornets girls were third in the 1,600 relay in 4:35.02 with Kwynn Voskhuhl, Sylvia Allen, Princess Pierre and Breyelle Bowers, the same quartet who were fourth in the 800 relay.

In addition, Baraga’s Nate Sterbenz was fourth in the boys discus, the same place that L’Anse’s Voskuhl was in the girls high jump.
