Trio of area schools champions at Kiwanis Invite golf
CHAMPION — Marquette, Westwood and Negaunee could all claim champions at the Kiwanis Invitational high school golf meet held at Wawonowin Country Club in Ely Township on Tuesday.
In the boys meet, which featured nine schools, Marquette took the team title by 10 strokes over runner-up Hancock, 318-328. Negaunee, which is in a cooperative with Ishpeming, was fifth with 345, while Westwood finished sixth with 356 and Gwinn was ninth with 456.
Westwood’s Tanner Annala was boys medalist with 74, beating out a pair of Marquette golfers for the top spot — the Sentinels’ Caleb Aho shot 76 and Jack Pond 79.
Also cracking the top 10 was the Sentinels’ Mason Nygard, tied for seventh place with 81, and teammate Lake Skytta, tied for ninth with 82.
Negaunee swept to team and individual titles in the girls meet, which included four schools with team scores and another four schools sending partial teams.
The Miners won by 30 strokes with 447 as Calumet was runner-up with 477. Westwood was a distant third with 566.
And Negaunee’s Ady Crookham was medalist with 98, beating out Calumet’s Maretta Kangas, who shot 100.
The Miners’ Sonya Erva was third with 110, teammate Reyna Debelak fourth with 114 and Kennidy Glasheen tied for seventh with 125.
