Toyras supports Sentinels’ Brennan in no-hit bid
MARQUETTE — Jake Toyras supported his pitcher Alex Brennan with the game’s only run-producing hit as Marquette won the opener of a high school baseball doubleheader at Gerard Haley Memorial Field in Marquette on Tuesday.
The Sentinels were victorious 1-0 over Calumet as Brennan twirled a no-hitter, walking one and not hitting a batter as his defense didn’t commit an error.
Things didn’t go as well in the nightcap as the Copper Kings scratched out five singles and were recipients of six Marquette errors and five walks as they forged the split with a 7-4 triumph.
Marquette’s next game will be in the MHSAA Division 1 district tournament at Traverse City West on Saturday. The Sentinels open against the host Titans at 11 a.m., then if they win, advance to the championship game at 1 p.m. against TC Central, Alpena or Mount Pleasant.
If they win that title, MSHS would advance to the Division 1 regional the following Wednesday.
Here are details from Tuesday’s games:
Marquette 1, Calumet 0
In the opener, Toyras collected his RBI single in the bottom of the first, giving Brennan a small lead to work with for the rest of this six-inning game.
Brennan, who doubled at the plate for one of the Sentinels’ three hits, struck out six and was listed as facing the minimum number of batters, 18, for that same number of outs. Teammate Trey Niemi had the most fielding chances with six, while Gib Jezewski had Marquette’s other hit, a triple, and scored the only run.
Darin Berg was the hard-luck losing hurler for the Copper Kings. He went all five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and no walks with five strikeouts, throwing 42 strikes in 51 total pitches.
Calumet 7, Marquette 4
In the nightcap, Brennan again pitched for the Sentinels, starting but only going 1 2/3 innings as he allowed two unearned runs on one hit with no walks nor strikeouts.
Aidan Mason, Toyras and Ian Sheltrow followed on the mound, each going between one inning and 2 1/3 innings and combining to allow five runs — only two earned — on four hits and five walks as they K’d three.
Trent Halonen cracked a two-run single in the first to give Calumet a 2-0 lead before Marquette came back with three runs in the second, a run scoring on an error, Mason single down the left field line and Sheltrow double to center to put the home team up 3-2.
The Sentinels added another run in the third for a 4-2 advantage when Jacob Geller hit an infield RBI single, but the Copper Kings retied it 4-4 in the fourth with a key hit a Tyler Halonen single to center on an 0-2 count.
Calumet then tacked on three more runs in the fifth to take the lead for good and make a winner of pitcher Jay Halonen, who threw a six-inning complete game as he gave up two earned and two unearned runs on six hits and no walks as he K’d seven.
Sheltrow led MSHS hitters, going 2 for 3 with an RBI, a double and a stolen base, while teammate Easton Jezewski also doubled in his only official at-bat, scoring a run.
Gib Jezewski, Geller and Mason each had singles, Geller and Mason collecting an RBI, while Marquette’s Drew Erickson scored a run and stole two bases despite not having a hit.
John Golus, who had Calumet’s walk in the opener, went 2 of 2 in this game.
