Sentinels softball hits rough patch

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School softball team had a rough time during a pair of Great Northern Conference doubleheaders over the past week.

Last Thursday, Kingsford came to the Chocolay Township Field and won 11-6 and 19-4, then on Monday, the Sentinels traveled to Escanaba and lost 11-1 and 9-5.

Marquette has another GNC twinbill today, hosting Menominee starting at 4:30 p.m., then has a doubleheader at Ishpeming at 4 p.m. Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on which school’s schedule you pay attention to, to wrap up the regular season.

MHSAA district tournaments are scheduled to start the following weekend.

Here are details from the Sentinels’ recent games:

Kingsford 11, Marquette 6

In the doubleheader opener last Thursday, the Flivvers jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the Sentinels starting clawing back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and four more times in the fifth.

Charlye Swajanen went the distance on the pitching rubber for MSHS, allowing 11 runs — but just four earned after Marquette fielders committed 10 errors — on seven hits and six walks as she struck out seven.

Swajanen helped her own cause at the plate, going 2 for 4 including a triple as she had two RBIs.

Teammate Keira Lindberg added a double and the team’s other two RBIs, while Halle Haynes, Eva Dewitt and Lauren Johnson had singles.

Kingsford’s Mya Brunswick also threw a complete game, allowing six runs — three earned after her team committed four errors — and six hits as she didn’t walk anyone and fanned 11.

Jenna Viau led Flivvers’ batters with two singles, while Brunswick and Kailey Sundquist each had a double, Brunswick knocking in two runs, too.

Kingsford 19, Marquette 4

In Thursday’s nightcap, the Flivvers erupted for 12 runs in the second after already building a 5-2 lead after one inning in a game that lasted just five frames.

Ava Hanford started and went just two-thirds of an inning for Marquette, allowing five runs — only one of them earned — on no hits and four walks.

Johnson mopped up the final 4 1/3 innings, allowing 14 runs — but just one earned as the Sentinels had seven errors — on 10 hits as she walked two and struck out one.

Reagan Cram went all five innings for Kingsford, giving up four unearned runs on three hits and six walks as she chalked up one K.

Marquette’s three singles were hit by Haynes, Swajanen and Lily Smigiel, with Lindberg collecting the team’s lone RBI. Teammate Layla Roman also drew two walks.

Escanaba 11, Marquette 1

In Monday’s first game at Escanaba, the Sentinels opened the scoring in the top of the first when a wild pitch brought in Haynes.

She also had a double, but it would be the only hit MSHS would collect off Esky winning hurler Landry Bray, who allowed the one earned run with no walks and 10 K’s while going all five innings.

Swajanen went the distance, 4 2/3 innings, and gave up 11 runs — five earned after seven errors by Marquette — with four walks as she fanned three.

Escanaba started its onslaught in the bottom of the second with four runs.

For Esky batters, McKenzie Enge Bretson and Grayson LaMarche each had two hits.

Escanaba 9, Marquette 5

In Monday’s nightcap, the Sentinels fought back, scoring in the third to pull within 3-1, then getting two more in both the fifth and sixth to get within 8-5.

Johnson went all six innings for Marquette, giving up nine runs — eight earned — on 10 hits and three walks. The Eskymos’ Cam Buckley went all seven innings, allowing five runs — though just two earned — on 10 hits and two walks as she fanned 12.

Escanaba established its lead with some power hitting as Buckley hit a two-run homer to center field in the second and Katey Lamb bombed a grand slam to center in the fourth. Lamb finished with five RBIs.

Swajanen had a good game at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Lindberg had two hits and an RBI and Johnson went 1 for 3 with two RBIs, including a sacrifice fly.
