Sentinels softball absorbs DH sweep to Esky

MARQUETTE — The Escanaba High School softball team showed what a quality program it has this season after posting a lopsided doubleheader sweep at Marquette on Monday.

The Eskymos won 15-0 in three innings and 20-5 in four innings at the Chocolay Township Field.

The Sentinels have another home doubleheader scheduled for today at 4:30 p.m. against Kingsford, then get a rematch at Escanaba on Monday.

In the opener, Marquette was no-hit by Esky hurler Grayson LaMarche as she pitched all three innings, not walking anyone and striking out eight.

Charlye Swajanen started on the pitching rubber for MSHS and gave up six hits in 1 1/3 innings, but that led to 15 runs, though only one was earned. That’s because the Sentinels committed 11 errors to none for Esky. Swajanen also walked three.

Lauren Johnson went the final 1 2/3 innings for the Sentinels, not allowing a run, hit or walk as she fanned one.

Escanaba scored 10 runs in the opening inning and five more in the second, but didn’t score in the third.

McKenzie Enge-Bretson led the Eskymos in the opener, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while teammate Katey Lamb had a double and a walk, knocked in three runs and scored three times.

In the nightcap, Johnson started for MSHS and went two innings, allowing 10 runs — eight earned — on eight hits and two walks as she had one K.

Ava Hanford followed with 1 2/3 innings, giving up nine runs, seven of them earned, on three hits and six walks as she had one strikeout. And Lily Smigiel got the final out, allowing an unearned run, one hit and two walks.

EHS pitcher Landry Bray went all four innings, giving up five unearned runs on three hits and a walk as she fanned four.

The teams’ fielding was just about even with Marquette committing four miscues to three for Escanaba.

Johnson, Smigiel and Halle Haynes each had singles for the Sentinels as Johnson and Smigiel both scored a run and Haynes had an RBI.

Bray and Lamb led the Eskymos’ attack, each going 2 for 2 with Bray getting two RBIs and Lamb scoring three times.

After the Eskymos put together an eight-run first inning, they led 12-0 before Marquette plated one in the third and four more in the fourth.
