Sentinels pound out 31 runs in softball sweep of Pats

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School softball team found its hitting shoes on Saturday, scoring 31 runs in just 11 innings during a home doubleheader sweep of Westwood.

Playing at the Chocolay Township Field, the Sentinels opened with an 18-11 win before tacking on a 13-3, five-inning victory in the nightcap.

The Marquette team lists its next game for 4:30 p.m. today at Negaunee, though the MSHS athletics schedule for varsity softball at marquetteathletics.com doesn’t list another game until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Gladstone.

Westwood’s next game is listed as 4 p.m. Wednesday, a doubleheader at Ishpeming.

Here are details from Saturday’s games:

Marquette 18, Westwood 11

In the opener, the Sentinels put together 14 runs from the second through fourth innings, offsetting 10 runs scored by the Patriots in the third and fourth.

Grace Sandstrom went 3 for 5 with a home run, a double, four RBIs and two runs scored for the Sentinels.

She hit a three-run homer to center in the second, then added an RBI double in the third, keying each of those five-run rallies.

Marquette also held an 18-7 edge in hits as each team committed three errors.

Charlye Swajanen went the distance on the Sentinels’ rubber for the pitching win, allowing 11 runs — but only three earned — on seven hits and four walks as she struck out six.

Taylor Jackovich took the loss for the Patriots, also going the distance as she gave up 18 runs — 12 earned — on 18 hits while walking four and fanning three.

Alexa Whaley went 3 for 4 for MSHS, getting a double, collecting an RBI and scoring twice, while Halle Haynes, Cece Fuller, Eva Dewitt, Layla Roman and Sammi Trapani all went 2 for 4. Haynes and Fuller each had three RBIs, while Trapani scored three runs and Haynes two.

Haynes and Swajanen joined Sandstrom in hitting homers, while Roman also had a double. Swajanen had two RBIs and scored a run as 10 Marquette players had at least one RBI and 11 scored at least once.

Morgan Schneider paced Westwood, going 2 of 3 with a walk and run scored, while Kaylin Doney might’ve only had one hit, but it was a doozy as she hit a third-inning grand slam to center and finished with five RBIs.

Teammates Hannah Niemi and Lexi Thibeault each cranked out doubles, Niemi finishing with two RBIs and two runs and Thibeault with one run. Emersyn Nelson scored twice as she had a single, was hit by a pitch twice and walked once, collecting an RBI.

After all the midgame rallies, Marquette led 14-10 starting the fifth inning. The Sentinels had one more big offensive outburst to provide some insurance, scoring four runs in the sixth before the Patriots added a single run in the top of the seventh.

Marquette 13, Westwood 3

In the nightcap that went five innings due to the 10-run rule, MSHS scored at least two runs in every inning to offset Westwood’s three-run third.

Dewitt put on her oversized hitting and running shoes, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Fuller was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and a run, and Sandstrom was 2 of 3, both hits doubles, as she collected four RBIs and had a sacrifice fly.

Lauren Johnson added in a 2-for-3 day with a double and run scored to the winning cause, while Roman was also 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Ava Hanford had an unusual line, going 1 for 1 but with four runs scored and three steals.

Swajanen also hit a double.

Fuller went the distance to earn the pitching win, allowing three runs — all unearned — on four hits as she didn’t walk a batter and fanned four.

Westwood’s Sami Ruby gave up 13 earned runs on 17 hits and three walks as she K’d two.

The Patriots’ Nolia Dawson went 2 for 3 from the leadoff spot, collecting an RBI and scoring a run, while Jackovich and Ruby each had singles with Ruby and Schneider each scoring a run.

Westwood didn’t commit an error while Marquette had four miscues.

A Dewitt single and Roman double in the first inning each drove in a run, while a Haynes single and Swajanen double were each good for an RBI in the second.

After the Patriots pulled within 4-3 in the top of the third, Marquette put together its third straight two-run inning in their half of the third after Roman hit an RBI single and Sandstrom an RBI double.
