Sentinels boys lose close tennis meet at Kingsford

KINGSFORD — Kingsford pulled out a pair of 7-5 victories in final sets at No. 1 flights to upend Marquette 5-3 in a high school boys tennis meet held at the Flivvers’ courts on Thursday.

Kingsford’s Gavin Moore won 6-2, 7-5 over the Sentinels’ Chase Thomsen at No. 1 singles, while the Flivvers’ Isaac LeBeouf and Jacob Crockford won 6-3, 7-5 over Marquette’s Abe Kentala and Bode Helman at No. 1 doubles.

“Hats off to Kingsford,” MSHS head coach Karl Thomsen said in an email detailing the result. “We played them the other day and had a nice team victory.

“However, (on Thursday) they took it to us. My hope is we can use this as motivation and up our game for the stretch run.”

Marquette split in singles but lost three of four flights in doubles.

Thomsen was satisfied with several of his winners, though.

“I was really happy with Brady Janofski at No. 3 singles,” he said about the Sentinels player winning 6-3, 6-3 over the Flivvers’ Evan Grymes. “He told me he was going to up his game (on Thursday) and he did. As a result, he was able to avenge his loss from this past Monday.

“Our No. 2 doubles team of Lucas Belkowski and Conner Henry continued a strong season be combining smart play with well-timed aggressiveness.”

That doubles tandem won 7-5, 6-0 over Kingsford’s Beau Bracket and Alex Hemgren.

The Sentinels have a busy week, playing at Escanaba at 4 p.m. today, at West Iron County at 4:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday, hosting Westwood at 3:30 p.m. Thursday and playing in the Negaunee Invitational starting at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
