MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School girls soccer team bumped its record to 8-6 after defeating Iron Mountain 4-0 last Thursday at the William R. Hart Stadium located at the high school.

Celebrating Senior Night, this was the Sentinels’ final home game of the regular season and followed three shutout losses at Lower Peninsula teams the previous weekend, 1-0 to Traverse City St. Francis, 6-0 to Lake Orion and 3-0 to Petoskey.

Against the Mountaineers, MSHS freshman Kirra Longton and Addi Sheltrow scored goals, as did sophomore Preslie Mason and senior Siena Goodney.

With Longton’s and Goodney’s goals unassisted, assists were attributed to sophomore Cora Wernholm and Sophie Wasik.

“It has been a great season so far,” MSHS head coach Colleen McKay said in an email detailing the result. “There’s been a lot of soccer over the past two months, and with all the changes due to weather, our team has really learned to adapt.

“I feel incredibly blessed to coach such a positive, hard-working group of players. We’ve improved so much from our first game to now, and I’m excited for our upcoming game against Gaylord, and I know our girls are too.”

There were 11 seniors from varsity and JV teams recognized in pregame festivities — varsity team members Carmen Bruce, Bella Brunswick, Siena Goodney, Joslyn Leuzzo, Anabel Ollila, Sienna Traye, Mia Spitz and Lucy Stern; and JV seniors Tessa Bruns, Sophia Henning and Sophie Wasik.

“Our senior class has been outstanding leaders for this team and program, and I’m so excited to see them begin their next chapter,” McKay said.

The Sentinels open MHSAA Division 2 district tournament play with a semifinal game at Gaylord at 7 p.m. Friday. From the look of the district bracket, Marquette will have to play every one of its tournament games on the road.

The district finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. next Thursday at the survivor from the other side of the bracket between Petoskey, Alpena and Sault Ste. Marie, with regionals slated to begin the following Tuesday in Grand Rapids.
