Pitchers dominate in Gladstone softball sweep of Sentinels
MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School softball team had a hard time solving a pair of Gladstone pitchers on Wednesday, losing both ends of a doubleheader to the visiting Braves.
Gladstone prevailed 8-0 in the opener at the Chocolay Lions Field in Chocolay Township before the Braves put up a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, Gladstone’s Tia Schone twirled a three-hitter, while in Game 2, Lauren Pare gave up just four hits.
The Braves helped their pitchers by not committing a fielding miscue throughout the two games while the Sentinels committed a total of 10 errors over the two contests.
In Game 1, Gladstone built a 5-0 lead after four innings before tacking on three more runs in the top of the seventh and final inning.
Marquette losing pitcher Charlye Swajanen allowed eight runs — seven earned — on 10 hits and five walks as she struck out three.
Swajanen also had two of the Sentinels’ three singles, while Sammi Trapani had the other. Schone walked just one batter while piling up 16 strikeouts.
In Game 2, Gladstone scored five in the top of the first before Marquette scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the second. The Braves used several more rallies to pump its lead to 10-1 before the Sentinels scored their final run in the bottom of the seventh.
Pare gave up just one earned run with two walks as she fanned nine. Marquette’s Cece Fuller took the pitching loss, allowing 10 runs — only four earned — on 10 hits as she walked two and struck out five.
Layla Roman went 2 for 3 for the Sentinels, scoring two runs and stealing two bases, while Swajanen and Lauren Johnson had their team’s other hits, all singles.
Marquette is in a busy stretch, with a date at Sault Ste. Marie at 4 p.m. today and then a trip across the Mackinac Bridge for the Boyne City Invitational on Saturday morning.
The Sentinels return home for a doubleheader against Escanaba at 4:30 p.m. Monday, a trip to Menominee for a game at 4 p.m. EDT Wednesday, then another home twinbill against Kingsford at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
