Newberry dominant at D-3 track regional in St. Ignace
MARQUETTE — Newberry dominated in winning both boys and girls team titles at a Division 3 regional in MHSAA Upper Peninsula high school track and field held in St. Ignace on Wednesday.
On Thursday in Baraga, the host Vikings, L’Anse and Republic-Michigamme finished as highly as third as each school qualified athletes for the U.P. Finals to be held in Kingsford on Saturday, May 31.
Division 3 qualifies two relays and four finishers in individual events for the finals.
Here are more details about each regional:
Rahilly, Nwose dominate
Newberry’s Adanne Nwose and Matthew Rahilly had perfect days in their respective meets, Rahilly winning four individual events and Nwose taking three individual and running a leg on an Indians’ relay.
The Newberry girls had a slightly larger margin of victory, scoring 69 points as runner-up St. Ignace had 56, Brimley 47 and Cedarville 10.
In the boys meet, the Indians scored 65 points as Brimley was only four behind with 61. The host Saints and Cedarville tied for third with 24, Paradise had 6, Ojibwe Charter 4 and Mackinac Island 2.
Nwose needed less than a minute and a half — in actual track time — to get her three individual wins, taking the 100-meter dash in 12.99 seconds, the 200 in 27.27 and the 300 hurdles in 48.82.
She also ran a leg on one of Newberry’s two winning girls relays, for her the 1,600.
Teammate Samantha Taylor was just as dominant, taking the 1,600 in 5:14.06, the 3,200 in 11:21.07 and running with her school’s victorious 1,600 and 3,200 relays.
Then there was Abby Taylor, who won the 800 in 2:35.21, and Makennah Russell, who captured the 400 in 1:01.96.
Abby Taylor added top-four qualifying finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200, while Russell did the same in the 100 and 200.
Also qualifying for the Indians’ girls were Sydney Duflo and Ivana Kopkova in the 800, Meah Derusha in the 1,600, Gracie Johnson in the 300 hurdles and Natalie Whalen in the shot put.
Newberry won the 1,600 relay in 4:28.60 and 3,200 relay in 10:51.53 as both included Samantha Taylor and Duflo. Nwose and Russell were also on the 1,600 relay and Kopkova and Abby Taylor on the 3,200.
Rahilly bludgeoned the boys’ field with triumphs in the 100 in 11.82 seconds; 200 in 24.06; high jump by clearing 5 feet, 10 inches; and long jump by leaping 20-1.
The Indians’ Connor Carlson won the 400 in 54.08 and Ethan Pavey the shot put with a heave of 42-6.
With a top-four finish, Carlson also qualified for the finals in the 200, Kellen Bruno in the 1,600 and 3,200, both Garrett Lewicki and Sam Rahilly in the 800, Colter Kitzman in the 300 hurdles, Jude Taylor in the shot put, Craig Whalen in the discus, Logan Thiele in the high jump and Howard Bliss in the pole vault.
The Newberry boys’ winners in the 1,600 relay clocked 3:47.24 and in the 3,200 relay timed 8:59.29. Sam Rahilly, Carlson and Garrett Lewicki were on both, with Kitzman also on the 1,600 and Grant Lewicki on the 3,200.
