Miners, Pats get qualifiers to U.P. track finals
HOUGHTON — Negaunee made out the best of a pair of area Division 1 teams at an MHSAA Upper Peninsula high school track and field regional held in Houghton on Thursday.
Westwood also qualified athletes for the U.P. Finals scheduled for Kingsford on Saturday, May 31.
The top four finishers in both individual and relay events continue on to the finals, with the same true in Division 2. In Division 3, the only difference is that only two relays qualify out of each regional, as there are twice as many regionals with a total of about three times as many teams in the smallest-schools division.
Here are more details about this regional:
Negaunee girls win
The Miners won the girls title with 75.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Houghton’s 51. Calumet was third with 30.5, followed by Kingsford with 19 and Westwood fifth with 11.
Two area girls, one each for the Miners and Patriots, won multiple events.
Negaunee’s Sadie Rogers took the 200-meter dash in 27.68 seconds, the 100 hurdles in 16.62 and the 300 hurdles in 48.13, the last a win by more than three seconds.
Westwood’s Lexi Olson took the high jump by clearing the bar at 4 feet, 11 inches, and the pole vault by making it over at 10-7.
The Miners had three more single winners — Nori Korsman in the long jump with a leap of 15-4, Keira Waterman in the 400 in 1:02.52 and Macyn DellAngelo in the 100 in 13.47.
But with fourth-place finishes in reality as good as wins at this meet, both area schools had several other finals qualifiers, too.
Korsman also made it in the high jump and pole vault, Waterman in the 800 and long jump and DellAngelo in the 200.
In an interesting twist, Negaunee’s Madison Pekrul and Josie Mechling both made it in both hurdles events, the 100 and 300. The Miners’ Elvera Coyne got in through the 100 dash and high jump, Priya Morey in the shot put and discus, Izzy Francisco in the 200, Adelyn Chapman in the 3,200, Paige O’Donnell in the shot put and Baylie Bourdeau in the discus.
For Westwood, Addelyn Hallum qualified for the finals in the 400.
In addition, Negaunee won the 400 relay in 52.76 seconds with DellAngelo, Francisco, Coyne and Rogers, and finished in the top four in each of the other three relays to get all those teams to Kingsford.
Mager leads boys
The host Gremlins won a close three-way race for the top spot in the boys meet with 53.25 points. Kingsford was runner-up with 48.5 while Negaunee was also within 10 points of victory with 44. Calumet came in fourth with 24.25 while Westwood was fifth with 17.
The Miners’ Brady Mager was the lone multi-winner from the area in the boys meet, as he was victorious in the 110 hurdles in 16.29 seconds, the 300 hurdles in 41.64 and the high jump after clearing 6-1.
Teammate Derek McEachern also won the 400 in 52.30, a triumph of almost two full seconds.
Westwood’s Louis Salmi won the pole vault by making it over at 11-0.
Those two schools combined to advance six relay teams to the finals, most notably the Miners’ 1,600 relay winning in 3:42.89 with Kyle Waterman, Thomas Menge, Blayne LaCosse and McEachern.
Negaunee’s 800 and 3,200 relays also qualified, as did Westwood’s 400, 800 and 3,200 relays.
Mager and McEachern also qualified for the finals in the 200, as did Waterman in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump. The Miners’ Cole Pekrul made it in the 110 hurdles and high jump, and Ethan Gauthier in the shot put and discus.
For Westwood, Gavin Comero joined Salmi in making the finals in the pole vault, while the Patriots’ Karter Scherer did the deed in the 100, Breckin Jensen in the 800 and Trenton Wash in the high jump.
