Tied 1-1, the big Negaunee outburst made a winner of Miners’ pitcher Owen Cardinal, who started and went 2 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs, though just one earned, on two hits as he walked six and struck out four.
Devin Jurmu and Morgan Robar followed on the mound for the Miners, each going 1 1/3 innings in this six-inning game. Jurmu didn’t allow a run or hit as he walked one and fanned one, while Robar gave up an unearned run and a hit with one K.
Desmond Gleason took the loss for Marquette, allowing seven runs — four of them earned — on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Ian Sheltrow and Jake Toyras followed on the mound for the Sentinels, between them giving up three earned runs on five hits with two walks and two K’s.
Negaunee outhit the Sentinels 8-3, while Marquette also lost the war on errors, 5-3. Negaunee also stole five bases to Marquette’s one.
Cardinal and teammates Ian Engstrom and Aidan Steele each had two hits, with Cardinal collecting two RBIs and scoring twice, Engstrom plating two runs, and Steele scoring twice and getting one RBI as he hit a triple.
Gleason and Marquette teammate Easton Jezewski both hit doubles while Evan Brown had a single. Jezewski also had two RBIs, while Gleason scored twice.
Marquette opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Jezewski drew a bases-loaded walk.
Negaunee answered with a run in the top of the second, the run coming home on an error.
Then the Miners erupted for their big rally in the third, using seven hits, the biggest being Engstrom’s two-run single on an 0-2 count.
Both these teams have games today before coming to Negaunee for the Negaunee Invitational on Saturday. Marquette is at Calumet at 4 p.m. today, while the Miners host Kingsford at 4:30 p.m.
