Marquette Sentinels score early, blank Escanaba Eskymos on diamond

MARQUETTE — Marquette got all the offense it needed — and also all it would get — in the first inning of a 4-0 high school baseball victory at home over Escanaba on Monday.

The Sentinels plated four runs in the opening inning, the key plays an RBI double by Desmond Gleason, bases-loaded walk issued to Jake Toyras and a ground out by Easton Jezewski that actually scored two runners.

Gleason also earned the pitching victory, going 6 2/3 innings and scattering six hits, five of them singles along with a double by the Eskymos’ Mikaiden Hughes. Gleason walked two while striking out nine.

Ian Sheltrow came on to get the final out in the seventh for the save, spreading nothing but zeroes across his pitching line.

Brian Boutilier took the loss for Escanaba, going the distance as he allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks as he fanned six.

Gleason and teammate Evan Brown each had a double, while Marquette’s Gib Jezewski went 2 for 2 with a walk, while Sheltrow and Toyras also had singles.

While the Sentinels were unable to garner a steal after making multiple swipes in just about every previous game, both MSHS and the Eskymos didn’t commit an error.

Owen Fields paced Esky hitters, going 2 for 3.

Marquette plays at Kingsford at 4:30 p.m. EDT Thursday before hosting Negaunee at 4 p.m. Monday.
