Marquette, Negaunee post boys tennis victories

MARQUETTE — With the No. 2 doubles flight needing three sets before going Marquette’s way, the Sentinels posted a 6-2 victory at Escanaba on Monday afternoon in a high school boys tennis meet.

“The match of the day was at No. 2 doubles,” MSHS head coach Karl Thomsen said in an email detailing the result. “Lucas Belkowski and Conner Henry started off hot, hit the ‘struggle bus,’ and kicked it in gear during the third set.”

The Sentinels’ pair pulled off a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 victory over the Eskymos’ Adam Prey and Cayden Fulsher, the only match that went three sets.

“It was satisfying to see the adjustments they made between the second and third set pay off,” Thomsen said.

Marquette got singles wins from No. 1 Chase Thomsen, No. 3 Brady Janofski and No. 4 Elan Chu.

“All four of our singles players hit the ball well. I’m starting to see more consistent play and more patience from all of the singles guys,” Thomsen said. “Our job now is to ramp up our play to the next level, so we’re peaking at the right time.”

The Sentinels have another match at home at 3:30 p.m. today against Westwood before making the short drive west on Friday morning for the Negaunee Invitational.

On Tuesday at Negaunee, all eight Miners singles players and doubles tandems got off to fast starts and ended their matches in two sets to run the NHS record to 8-1.

“One thing we wanted to do … was show more aggression at the net, and we did so in many places,” Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari said in an email detailing the result. “Each flight knows it’ll be necessary to grow beyond what they were last week as we enter the stretch run (of the season).”

He was particularly pleased with his No. 4 doubles duo of Jhon Jarvi and Marshall Knapp, who won a 6-2, 6-1 decision over the Wykons’ Carson Aldegarie and Cayden Holm.

“Jhon and Marshall seem to have settled in nicely at (No.) 4 doubles for us, and it’s a spot we never take for granted,” Saari said. “Consistency is key there.”
