Goss leads Munising boys at Skyline track

HARRIS — Big Bay de Noc’s Destiny Bleau continued her solid freshman track and field season here Wednesday, winning three events at the Skyline Central Conference meet.

She topped the field in the 100-meter dash in 13.2 seconds, 200 (26.61) and high jump (5-feet even).

Stephenson edged Forest Park 102-100 for the girls team title. North Dickinson placed third with 65, three points better than Bark River-Harris. Munising was fifth with 44, while Superior Central came in 10th with 11.

The Munising boys earned top honors with 134 points, followed by BR-H 111, Rapid River 77 and Forest Park 67. SC was sixth with 27.

Forest Park junior Ava Fischer had a hand in four firsts, taking the girls’ 100 hurdles at 17.24, 300s in a season-best 50.5, pole vault at eight feet, edging BR-H sophomore Mira Johnson on a tiebreaker, and helping the winning 1600 relay (4:33.88).

Munising’s best finish was by Dayne Behning with a runner-up finish in the 100 hurdles in 17.30 seconds, just six-hundredths off Fischer’s pace.

Superior Central’s top finisher was Marlene Johnson in the 400, fourth in 1:08.09.

Carney-Nadeau senior Mariska Laurila swept the weight events, taking shot put (32-10) and discus (100-6).

Munising’s boys were led by seniors Dan Goss and Trevor Nolan, who placed 1-2 in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 and helped the Mustangs take the 3,200 relay that also included Nolan Connaughton and Blake Lakosky.

Goss ran season-bests in the 800 (2:06.76) and 1,600 (4:37.42) to go with his win in the 3,200 (10:57.82).

Nolan, a Bay College basketball recruit, was runner-up with personal-bests in the 800 (2:08.16) and 1,600 (4:39.15) while he clocked 11:03.92 in the 3,200.

“The Goss-Nolan connection is a nice train to ride,” Mustangs’ coach Matt Mattson said. “Our relays stepped up. We changed some things and had some nice finishes. We have nice balance on the boys’ side and I thought the girls did all right. Our relays did well. Bark River-Harris is tough. We tied with them one day and they beat us on another day.”

Munising junior Dylan Adkinson took the 200 (24.09) and was runner-up in the 100 (12.01), while the Mustangs’ 400 and 800 relays won with the same lineup — Jack Dusseault, Levi Hauler, Cayden Wieczorek and Zack Lindquist. The 400 clocked 47.31 seconds and the 800 came in at 1:37.97.

Superior Central sophomore Will Spranger won the 400 (53.98), just four-hundredths of a second ahead of Rapid River sophomore Jeb Green.

Starting at $3.23/week.
