Doubles sweep leads Miners to tennis triumph

NEGAUNEE — Negaunee used a sweep in doubles to take a 6-2 victory over visiting Gladstone in a high school boys tennis meet held Tuesday afternoon.

“Our doubles have turned into a strength for us and each of those (duos) have played smart and steady for us,” Miners head coach Kyle Saari said in an email detailing the result. “We have to follow their lead as a whole.”

Every match in the meet last just two sets, though Negaunee’s toughest victory may have come at No. 2 doubles, when Carson Lajimodiere and Quinn Walters outlasted the Braves’ Matt Hagebusch and Sam Hedman 6-0, 7-5.

With doubles sweeping, the Miners’ split in singles proved good enough. That included a 6-0, 6-1 victory posted by No. 1 player Brady Johnson over Tyler Soderman.

“Brady put together a solid all-around match and he’s learning the importance of mixing shots,” Saari said.

Negaunee (5-0) has another home meet today at 4 p.m. vs. Escanaba, while the Miners travel south for the Kingsford Invitational, tentatively listed as starting at 11 a.m. EDT Saturday.
