ISHPEMING — Several athletes from nonwinning teams turned in multiple victories, but in the end, the Marquette boys and Negaunee girls high school track and field teams were solid team champions at the Marquette County Meet held at the Ishpeming High School track on Monday.

The Sentinels boys posted 214.5 points, outscoring runner-up Negaunee by 59 as the Miners totaled 155.5. Westwood was third with 72, followed by Gwinn with 45, Republic-Michigamme 16 and Ishpeming 14.

The Negaunee girls had an even bigger margin of victory, scoring 247 to 101 for runner-up Marquette. Ishpeming was third with 66, while Westwood had 55, Gwinn 30 and R-M didn’t score.

MHSAA Upper Peninsula regional meets were and are scheduled for Wednesday, today and Friday, with seven of the eight including area squads. Trio of Miners triple up

Led by Keira Waterman, Macyn DellAngelo and Madison Pekrul, the Negaunee girls won 13 of the 17 events in their meet, including sweeping the relays.

Waterman was the lone winner of three individual events, taking the 200- and 400-meter dashes along with the long jump.

DellAngelo won the 100 dash and Pekrul the 300 hurdles as each was also on two victorious relays — both were on the 800 relay, DellAngelo also on the 400 relay and Pekrul on the 1,600 relay.

Teammate Adelyn Chapman also won the 3,200 and Sadie Rogers the 100 hurdles as Chapman was on the 3,200 relay winners and Rogers on the 400 relay victors.

The Miners’ Priya Morey added a victory in the shot put and Baylie Bourdeau in the discus, while Nori Korsman, Riley Conklin and Izzy Francisco were each on a pair of triumphant Negaunee relays.

Marquette’s Monet Argeropoulos doubled up with victories in the 800 and 1,600, while Westwood’s Lexi Olson did the same, taking the pole vault and high jump.

In addition, the Patriots’ Addelyn Hallum was runner-up in the 200 and 400, while Ishpeming had three second-place finishes — Laynie Korpi in the 1,600, Jaydn Negilski in the shot put and Nora Jo Anderson in the high jump.

Gwinn had the same foursome in its runner-up 400 and 800 relays — Kadence Ruggerio, Alexa Jakubowski, Alayna Soyring and Miaha Schiefel.

And R-M’s best finish was by Isabel Anderson after she placed eighth in the 100.

Relays spark Sentinels’ boys

Marquette and Negaunee each won five individual events in the boys meet, but it was the Sentinels’ sweep of the relays that may have put them over the top.

The only multiple winners in individual events came via two Miners — Brady Mager won the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and high jump, while Derek McEachern annexed victories in the 200 and 400.

MSHS had five winners of individual events, plus another 16 slots in the four winning relays.

Marquette’s James Goodwin won the 100 and ran on the victorious 400 and 800 relays, Nathan Cattoor took the discus, Carson Wernholm the 800, Beepsee Teeple the 1,600 and Ivan Neumann the 3,200.

In addition, the Sentinels’ Charles Hrodey ran with three winning relays, the 400, 800 and 1,600, while teammate Ben Rayhorn had a hand in two winning relays.

Westwood picked up a victory when Louis Salmi won the pole vault, Gwinn got a victory with Mason Beauchamp in the shot put and R-M scored just about all its points in the long jump, led by John Wheeler winning it.

Also, the Patriots’ Jared Waterman was runner-up in the 800, Ishpeming’s Josh Wojie second in the 400, while Beauchamp was third in the discus and Modeltowners’ teammate Donald Jourden third in the pole vault.

And the Hawks’ Kenneth Ambuehl finished third in the long jump.
