Baer medalist as Miners boys, girls golfers 2nd at Young’s
IRON RIVER — With boys golfer Kody Baer leading the way as medalist, Negaunee finished as runner-up in both the boys and girls meets at the Young’s Golf Course near Iron River last Thursday.
In the boys meet, the Miners lost by a single stroke to Hancock. The Bulldogs totaled 322 to the Miners’ 323.
In the field of 16 teams, Jeffers was third with 330, Houghton had 336 and Calumet 342. There was a dropoff to the next team, Iron Mountain, with 371, while Baraga was seventh with 376, Westwood eighth with 380 and Gwinn 13th with 452.
For the girls, Negaunee came up 11 strokes shy of Ontonagon for the team title. Negaunee had 437 to 426 for the Gladiators. Calumet was third with 445, followed by Hancock with 453 and Houghton 556. Gwinn and Baraga were among five teams that didn’t field a full complement of four golfers.
In the boys meet, Baer earned his medalist recognition by shooting 76 in the field of 74 golfers, while teammate Holden Meyer was seventh overall with 81 and Dane Saari 10th with 82. Negaunee’s roster was rounded out with Jordan Guenette shooting 84, good for 14th, while its fifth score was Cash Karvonen’s 85, good for 18th.
Houghton’s Jack Sayen finished two strokes behind Baer with 78, while Hancock’s Jackson Sintkowski was third with 79. The Bulldogs’ strength was its depth as all five of their golfers finished in the top 10.
Baraga’s top shooter was Jace Sikkila with 89, good for 26th, as Daniel Connor had 93, Kale Cichocz 94, Keegan Davidson 100 and Xander Rice 130.
For Westwood, Eli Nutini led the way with 91, good for 29th, as Kyle Krook shot 95, Alex Turek 96, Dustin Wing 98 and Jimmy Mattola 108.
From Gwinn, Vinny Paulson was the leader with 96, good for 37th, as Andrew Hill shot 103, Sage Melka 118, Cooper Derouin 135 and Noah Tregembo 152.
In the girls meet, Negaunee’s Sonya Erva finished second after shooting 92 as Ontonagon’s Madyson Pantti was medalist with 89 in a field of 34 golfers.
Also for the Miners, Ady Crookham was sixth overall with 103, Aili Menard 10th with 111, while Reyna Debelak and Mialie Arbelius tied for the team’s fourth-best score, each with 128.
Baraga had three golfers, the best being Sophia Carr with 131 as teammate Karli Clisch shot 154 and Mea Lanczy 156.
Gwinn’s lone representative was Emily Lehtomaki with 152.
