Academics count, too: NMU honors athletes for their studies

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University recently recognized a large number of athletes as honorees for its Scholar-Athletes of the Month during the past school year, along with the induction of 114 students into the Chi Alpha Sigma 2025 National College Athlete Honor Society.
Chi Alpha Sigma is the first and only nonprofit organization established to recognize four-year college student-athletes who achieve both academic and athletic success. Founded in 1996 by then-DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis, Chi Alpha Sigma continues to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime.
To qualify, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior working on an undergraduate degree and have a 3.50 or better cumulative grade-point average based on a 4.00 scale.

NMU recognized a male and female athlete in each of the past eight months as its Scholar-Athletes of the Month:

Honor society
Though each sports has a differing number of athletes, the cross country and track and field teams at NMU could boast having the most inductees into Chi Alpha Sigma with 15.
What all the Wildcats could feel proud of is having 20 teams represented in the honor society, with cross country and track and field considered separate sports.
