Northern Michigan University Wildcats women’s nordic skiing team places well at end-of-season SuperTour Finals

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University women’s nordic ski team took part in four days of competition at the SuperTour Finals at Lake Placid, New York, that ended just about a week ago.

Dybwad, Nilssen back-to-back for NMU
Opening day included the 10-kilometer individual start freestyle for the women as Northern’s Victoria Dybwad and Henriette Nilssen finished in consecutive places.

Dybwad came across the finish line first in 19th place in 27 minutes, 41.1 seconds, followed soon after by Nilssen in 20th in 28:01.2.
NMU’s Jordan Parent was 39th in 31:23.4 while Merle Richter did not finish.
With Nilssen getting one SuperTour point, she increased her season total to 35, ranking her 32nd overall, while Dybwad earned her first two points of the season. Parent remained at one point.
The women raced on the same 4,810-meter (nearly three-mile) course as the men, with the same 94-meter (308.4-foot) change in elevation, 46-meter (150.9-foot) maximum climb and 182 meters (597.1 feet) of total climb.
At the first marker at 1.25K, Dybwad was eighth in 3:43.6 before she dropped to 15th at 2.5K in 7:20.4. She slipped just a touch to 18th at 8.75K in 25:02.3 before finishing 19th.
Along with that overall finish, Dybwad was 11th among skiers ages 23 and younger and ninth among college skiers.
Nilssen remained right around her final 20th place throughout. She was 21st at 1.25K in 3:57.2, 19th at 6.25K in 18:00.6 and in 20th at the other five markers.
Nilssen was 12th among the 23-and-under crowd and 10th in the NCAA.
Parent was 27th at 1.25K in 4:03.7, 37th at 2.5K in 8:15.6 and fell to 40th at 3.75K in 12:02.2 before rebounding to 39th most of the rest of the way.
Lucinda Anderson of Team Birkie won in 25:20.0, with Erica Laven of the University of Utah runner-up in 25:42.0 and Lilliane Gagnon of Centre Nationale d’enterainement Pierre-Harvey third.
Anderson is a member of the U.S. Biathlon Team for the Biathlon World Championships, Laven most recently won gold in the 15K freestyle at the NCAA Championships, and Gagnon won a bronze medal for Team Canada at FIS Nordic Junior and Under-23 World Ski Championships.

Nilssen, Richter top sprinters
On Day 2 in the sprints, Nilssen and Richter advanced out of qualifications, finishing in the top 30 among 75 competitors.
Nilssen was 25th in qualifying in 3:17.08 and Richter less than a second back in 26th in 3:17.88. They were also 11th and 12th, respectively, among college skiers.
They were placed in the same quarterfinal where Nilssen was fifth in 3:17.68 and Richter sixth in 3:27.41, missing advancing beyond that round.
Two other NMU women also raced in qualifying, Dybwad just missing the top-30 cut in 33rd in 3:20.64 and Parent 43rd in 3:27.13.

After the mixed-team relays on Day 3, a 40K classic mass start race finished the SuperTour for women skiers.
Nilssen and Richter finished the race for NMU, Nilssen 23rd and Richter 25th, though times weren’t available.
Nilssen was back in 26th place at 11.25K, then jumped back to 21st just 5K later before finishing 23rd. Richter went between 22nd and 27th throughout.
Nilssen was 13th among college skiers and 15th for those under 23 years old, while Richter was 17th in the college group and eighth among senior-level skiers.
Dybwad and Parent didn’t finish.
The SMS pro team dominated the top spots, with Jessie Diggins winning in 2:16:45.3 and Julie Kern runner-up in 2:16:59.2. Utah’s Laven was third in 2:22:30.2.
