Westwood Patriots girls basketball team runs win streak to 3 with pair of victories this week

ISHPEMING — The Westwood High School girls basketball team moved back above .500 at 10-9 with a pair of victories on the road this week.

Now working on a three-game winning streak, the Patriots downed West Iron County 62-28 on Tuesday and Gwinn 53-21 on Thursday.

Against WIC, Izzie Marta scored 21 points and teammate Lexi Olson added 20 to lead Westwood, while Kaitlyn Smith topped Wykons scorers with nine points.

Then in the game vs. the Modeltowners, Eliisa Doney led the victors with 11 points, while Makayla Delmont paced Gwinn with 12.

The Patriots play three games next week to complete their regular season.

At 7 p.m. Monday, Westwood hosts Jeffers for Senior Night, then the Pats stay home to host Baraga at 7 p.m. Tuesday before heading south to Kingsford for a game against the Flivvers at 7:30 p.m. EST Thursday.

Starting on Monday, March 3, Westwood will host an MHSAA Division 3 district tournament.

With the format as a nontraditional bracket, all games will be played at one of the teams involved in each game, while Westwood is scheduled to be the host in any game the Patriots play.

The others teams in their district are Ishpeming, Calumet, Ironwood, Jeffers and West Iron County.

The MHSAA hadn’t announced pairings for girls district tournaments on its website, www.mhsaa.com, as of Friday afternoon, while pairings are set for the boys districts that will be held next week.
