Kendall Chipelewski leading scorer for Marquette Sentinels at high school gymnastics meet at Calumet

CALUMET — Kendall Chipelewski led the Marquette Senior High School gymnastics team in a dual meet held at Calumet on Saturday.

Facing the Superior Eight squad — a team made up of eight Copper Country high schools — Chipelewski had the Sentinels’ top all-around score while also finishing as her team’s No. 1 or No. 2 scorer in each of the four disciplines.

Her all-around total was 33.10 points, trailing only the 35.55 posted by Superior’s Nora Keranen and 35.10 by Superior’s Brooklyn Tatman.

Chipelewski had Marquette’s top score of 9.20 on the floor exercise and best total of 8.50 on the beam. She was also the Sentinels’ second-best scorer on bars with 6.80 and on vault with 8.60.

“The girls really stepped up, showing huge improvements from our last competition,” MSHS head coach Alex Wilkinson said. “We were able to take better advantage of the bonus system, which helped boost our scores, and we’re excited to keep working on perfecting skills and adding upgrades.

“With(in) only a short time, the girls were able to make major changes to their beam and floor routines — and they absolutely nailed it!

“Some girls even threw (in) brand-new skills for the first time, which was super exciting to see. We’re beyond proud of their hard work and can’t wait to see them keep shining.”

Keranen was No. 1 on floor with 9.40 and on beam with 9.25, while Tatman was tops on bars with 8.35 and on vault with 8.90.

Marquette’s No. 2 all-around scorer was Lola Rink with 32.45 points, while teammate Anabel Ollila was next with 32.25, followed by Tatum Larson with 31.65 and Alexys Johnson with 29.40.

On floor, Ollila was fourth overall and second for the Sentinels with 8.60, while Larson and teammate Claire Cass each posted 8.50, Rink 8.20, Marquette’s Bailey Francisco 8.00 and Johnson 7.10.

On the beam, Ollila was also second for MSHS and fourth overall with 8.45, while Rink was next with 8.35, Larson 8.05, Johnson 7.85, Cass 7.65 and teammate Elsa Henry 7.25.

On bars, Rink was Marquette’s No. 1 performer and third overall with 7.40. With Chipelewski next, Ollila and Larson each came after that with 6.70, while Johnson had 6.00.

And on vault, Ollila was the Sentinels’ top scorer and third overall with 8.70, followed by Chipelewski, then Rink with 8.50, Johnson 8.45 and Larson 8.40.

On Saturday morning, the Marquette team will make another trek north for a meet at Calumet, then is set to participate in a meet at Bark River-Harris on Tuesday evening.
