Ishpeming-Negaunee Gators swim & dive teams win 3 events in boys, girls meets vs. Gladstone

NEGAUNEE — The Ishpeming-Negaunee swimming and diving teams had the depth, but just not enough wins to pull out meet victories against visting Gladstone at the Negaunee High School pool on Tuesday.

The Braves prevailed in the girls meet 74-59 and in the boys meet 96-62.

And the I-N Gators won just three of 12 events in each meet with those close scores.

In the girls meet, I-N’s Emma Arbelius set a Negaunee record in diving when she won that event with 185.25 points.

Teammate Lola Dockery won the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 20.97 seconds, while Riley Conklin took the 500 freestyle in 7:42.65.

For the boys, the Gators’ Joey Giroux won twice, taking the diving with 152.95 points and the 50 free in 29.47 seconds.

I-N’s Caden Steele appended a win in the 100 breaststroke in an Upper Peninsula Finals qualifying time of 1:20.16.

In all, there were nine U.P. Finals qualifying times between the two teams.

The Gators are off until next Friday when they join Escanaba at a triangular meet to be held in Gladstone at 4 p.m.
