Volleyball Sentinels fall in 3 sets to No. 1 Calumet

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE — Calumet defeated Marquette in three straight sets on Thursday evening in a match between two of the Upper Peninsula’s top high school volleyball programs.

The Copper Kings have been No. 1 for most of the season in Divisions 1-3 in the weekly polls conducted by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, while the Sentinels were No. 4 in the most recent poll that came out last week.

Calumet prevailed 25-23, 25-13, 27-25.

“(We) put up a strong defensive performance and displayed excellent teamwork on the court,” MSHS head coach Melissa Butler said in an email about the match. “The team made very few errors overall and showed great cohesion.

“Although we struggled in some areas, I am pleased with the overall performance.”

Marquette is scheduled to play at Menominee at 7 p.m. EDT Thursday, then won’t have another match until Oct. 22, a road match at Gladstone.
