NMU men’s soccer fall at Roosevelt 3-1

By Journal Sports Staff

CHICAGO — The Northern Michigan University men’s soccer team lost a 3-1 decision at Roosevelt on Sunday to remain in the basement of the GLIAC.

The Wildcats slipped to 5-7-2 overall and 2-7-1 in the GLIAC, a half-game behind 2-6-2 Purdue Northwest. Purdue NW is next up on Northern’s menu for a game at 3 p.m. EDT Friday in Hammond, Indiana. The Wildcats finish off the regular season at 2:30 p.m. EDT Sunday at Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Rangers are the next team up in the standings from Purdue NW.

The GLIAC tourney, featuring the top six teams from the seven-team league, opens on Sunday, Nov. 10, with the quarterfinal round at campus sites.

On Sunday, the Lakers got all three of their goals from Oskar Schuster, who now has seven goals this season.

He opened the scoring in the 31st minute after a free kick, then got the second after an errant NMU pass, and finished it off to make it 3-0 in the 52nd minute.

The Wildcats averted the shutout when Jaziel Sainz de Vilmorin scored in the 76th minute. NMU’s Kyle Cameron chased down a lead pass from teammate Jan Hoffmann down the right side of the box. Cameron corralled the ball on the touch line and slipped a pass to Sainz de Vilmorin, who snuck the ball past the outstretched hand of the goalkeeper.

Shots were nearly even, with each team taking 11 shots and Northern holding a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. NMU also took eight corner kicks to Roosevelt’s three.
