Miners, Sentinels post volleyball victories

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee High School volleyball team opened its varsity season with a home victory over Westwood on Aug. 27.
“This squad has meshed well over the past few weeks and are really starting to put things together on the court,” Miners head coach Krista Squiers said in an email detailing the result. “We played very well as a team and everyone was able to contribute.
“I look forward to what this season brings and what this team can accomplish together.”
Though set scores weren’t available, Squiers did note that Janelle Rautiola contributed two kills, four service aces and nine assists to her team’s winning effort. Teammate Aleana Park added a kill, three aces and five assists, while Tessa Kangas made four aces.
Next on Negaunee’s schedule is a match at Marquette at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Westwood is set to play at L’Anse at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Last Wednesday in Marquette, the Sentinels won their season opener by dispatching the Blue Devils, 25-15, 25-23, 25-14.
“Our home opener win was a great way to start the season,” Melissa Butler said in an email detailing the result of her first match as head coach at MSHS. “We came out a little flat in the second set but were able to bounce back.
“Defensively, we had an outstanding game and some power hitters helped pull off the win.
“We still have much to work on, but we are getting closer daily in practice.”
Statistics weren’t available from this match.
Marquette is set to participate in the downstate Mitten Classic at Bay City Western on Saturday morning.
