MARQUETTE — It was a long time coming, but freshman Kevin Marx Noren now makes it a perfect 10 for the Northern Michigan University hockey team when he was named the CCHA Rookie of the Week on Monday.
His was the 10th league weekly honor earned by a Wildcat skater this season as it was his first such award.
After NMU won a whole passel of these awards in the season’s first two months, it was Northern’s first honor since Beni Halasz was named CCHA Goaltender of the Week on Nov. 27.
Marx Noren led all conference players with four assists over the weekend that allowed NMU to earn five of a possible six points in a home-and-home series against Upper Peninsula archrival Michigan Tech.
He had two assists each night in the Wildcats’ 4-1 home win on Friday and 3-3 tie that became a shootout victory in Houghton on Saturday.
A native of Knivsta, Sweden, Marx Noren also had a game-high seven shots on goal on Friday night for a weekend total of eight shots and a blocked shot while on defense.
He now leads all Northern freshmen with his 10 assists and 13 points, which also ranks him in the CCHA at sixth in assists and seventh in points.
The Wildcats have won at least two of each of the four weekly awards this season. Previous Rookie of the Week honorees were Tanner Latsch on Oct. 16 and 23, Goaltender of the Week have been Beni Halasz on Oct. 30 and Nov. 27 and Charlie Glockner on Nov. 20, Defenseman of the Week were Josh Zinger on Oct. 16 and 30, and Forward of the Week have been Latsch on Oct. 16 and Artem Shlaine on Nov. 13.
NMU has had one CCHA Player of the Month award winner this season — Latsch as Rookie of the Month in October.
All four CCHA honorees this week are freshmen and sophomores. The others are Bowling Green sophomore Quinn Emerson as Forward of the Week, BGSU freshman Michael Bevilacqua as Defenseman of the Week and St. Thomas sophomore Aaron Trotter as Goaltender of the Week.
