Marquette Blues come back for 8-4 American Legion baseball win over Escanaba Cubs on Thursday

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Blues picked up an 8-4 win against one of their longtime rivals, the Escanaba Cubs, at the Gerard Haley Memorial Field in Marquette on Thursday.

It was a bit of a sloppy game as only one of the dozen runs scored between the teams was considered an earned run due to four errors committed by each team.

But that didn’t mean it wasn’t competitive, as the Blues had to rally with a five-run fifth inning to erase Escanaba’s 3-2 advantage.

Each team added another run in the sixth and Marquette held the Cubs off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to take the victory.

The Blues’ Isaac Sarles started and pitched six innings to earn the victory, allowing four runs — all unearned — on seven hits as he walked one and struck out seven.

Dakota Maki got the save by pitching the final inning, allowing a hit and fanning one.

Esky’s Isaiah Brow was the hard-luck loser, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing seven unearned runs on seven hits as he walked one and fanned three.

Trent Turchin went the final 1 1/3 innings for the Cubs, allowing an earned run on one hit and one walk.

Nick Pantti led Marquette’s eight-hit attack as the only Blues batter with multiple hits as he went 2 of 3 with an RBI.

Maki was 1 of 4 with two RBIs, while Sarles, AJ Martin and Easton Miller each had a hit, RBI and run scored.

In addition, teammates Logan Peterson and Gibson Jezewski each had singles.

And teammates Keith Juidici and Dallas Cobe did plenty of damage without recording an official at-bat. Juidici walked twice and was hit by a pitch, while Cobe as a courtesy runner stole two bases and scored three times.

Turchin and Cubs’ teammates Jake McEvers and Bryce Blixt each had two hits, including the game’s only extra-base hit, a double by Turchin.

The Blues host the Blues Alumni team for a special exhibition on the morning of the Fourth of July at 10 a.m., while the Marquette Reds are scheduled to host the Marquette Junior Reds at the same time.
