CHAMPION -- Three former champions are on a collision course in the championship flight of the Upper Peninsula Ladies Golf Association tournament being held at Wawonowin Country Club in Ely Township.
Three-time defending champion Paxton Johnson, 2015 winner Karen Plaisier and 1979 victor Sue Micklow are among the four semifinalists in the featured flight of the event.
The fourth semifinalist is Lori Shea of Gladstone.
Johnson, who earned the No. 1 seed as the winner the last time this event was held in 2021, defeated Katie Komsa in their Monday morning match, though no score was available.
Johnson will be a 22-year-old senior on the Northern Michigan University women's golf team this fall.
Plaisier, the No. 4 seed who won this event at age 65 eight years ago, is an Ishpeming resident and former Negaunee High School golf team coach. She downed Mary Jo Stuart in her match Monday.
Micklow, the No. 10 seed who is a Marquette resident, took this title back in 1979. She downed Avery Elsner, while Shea, at No. 3, fended off Sandra Collins in her quarterfinal match.
At 9 a.m. today, Johnson squares off against Plaisier while Micklow goes up against Shea for the right to play in the championship match, also scheduled for today at 1:30 p.m.
In the presidents flight, which includes the eight golfers who lost their opening-round matches Sunday in the championship flight, Nancy Osier, Barb Blewett, Diane Frustaglio and Amy Johnson advanced to the semifinals to be played at 9:20 a.m. today.
And in the first flight, Kathy Gagnon and Madelyn Koski have each won two matches to advance to this morning's championship match.
There are also matches to be contested in the second through seventh flights.
