Little League softball, baseball District 11 tournaments nearing championship contests

MARQUETTE — With games postponed on Monday due to inclement weather, three elimination games in Little League District 11 tournaments in youth softball and baseball are scheduled for today.

LaCombe Field in Negaunee will host a 6 p.m. game in the softball Minor Division between Ishpeming and Negaunee, according to an email from district administrator Don Gladwell.

The winner of that game advances to the championship round against Marquette on Thursday at a time to be announced. If the Ishpeming-Negaunee winner also triumphs on Thursday, the “if necessary” game will be played later Thursday.

Kaufman Sports Complex in Marquette will host a pair of games at 4 p.m. today in the baseball Junior Division and softball Major Division.

The baseball game pits Negaunee vs. Ishpeming, with the winner to play winner’s bracket champ Marquette in the championship immediately after.

If Marquette loses that game, the “if necessary” game is set for Wednesday.

The softball game will be between Negaunee and Penokee Range (Gogebic County) and is the resumption of a game suspended from Sunday.

That winner faces Marquette in the championship round immediately after, while a loss by Marquette in that game would set up the “if necessary” contest for Wednesday.

In games played Sunday, Marquette outscored Penokee Range 19-9 in five innings in the Majors softball, while Marquette led Negaunee 7-6 in the game that was suspended.

In Minors softball, Marquette downed Ishpeming 15-1 in four innings in the winner’s bracket, while Negaunee dropped Gwinn 18-1 in three innings in the elimination bracket.

And in Junior baseball, Negaunee beat Ishpeming 12-2, Marquette edged Negaunee 5-4 and Ishpeming felled Gwinn 6-1 in 4 1/2 innings.
