Back 9 Endurance Run later this month in Copper Harbor

COPPER HARBOR — The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge will host the second annual Back 9 Endurance Run on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 28-29.

Touted as a unique experience for runners in the Upper Peninsula, the event consists of 12- and 24-hour races for individuals or teams of two or four people.

The lodge in Copper Harbor is a resort at the tip of the U.P. and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Back 9 course is along the lodge’s Back 9 Trails and its golf course, a loop about 3 1/2 miles long with hills, flats, forest and spectacular view of nearby Brockway Mountain. Lanterns and other lighted, glowing or reflective markers are set along the trail to aid in night running.

Race creator Mariah Summers, an avid trail runner, led 31 participants in the inaugural running that began at 8 a.m. That meant the 12-hour race ended at 8 p.m. that day and the 24-hour race the following day at 8 a.m.
