Negaunee tennis splits season-opening matches
ESCANABA — The Negaunee High School boys tennis team brought home split results from a tridual match in Escanaba, falling to the host team 5-3, but defeating Menominee, 8-0.
“As defending champs Esky has the target to carry around for much of the year,” said Kyle Saari, Negaunee head tennis coach/ This was a great opportunity to see where we stand early, and it came down to the wire in the last match at #1 singles.
“We have a lot of room to grow yet which is encouraging,”Saari said. “Mick Kumpula played extremely well in both matches. He has a year of experience already at #4 singles, and knows what to expect. Bryce Storms and Gavin Downey are off to a strong start, too. Both kids work hard and Cody Scanlon, our JV coach, did a nice job getting those guys ready.”
Negaunee (1-1) is scheduled to play Monday, hosting Kingsford at 4 p.m.
