IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain boys and girls golf teams struggled to keep up with some of their rivals Monday during a quad-meet at the Pine Grove Country Club.
The boys team finished third on the day with a team score of 202. That was well behind Marquette which posted a winning tally of 169, just two strokes better than Kingsford’s 171. West Iron County posted a fourth-place 257.
Cooper Pigeon medaled for the Mountaineers with a match-best 41 over nine holes. Brett Ramme added a 45 for Iron Mountain, followed by teammates Joey Colavecchi (56) and Sam Yake (60).
Pigeon didn’t win the day by much, as three Redmen and two Flivvers were just a stroke behind.
Lance Harry and Dan Maki both shot a 42 to lead the Flivvers, with Troy Watt hitting a 43 and Cole Myllyla chipping in with a 44 to complete the scoring for Kingsford.
West Iron struggled in comparison, with Brennan Horton (53) leading the team’s quartet that also included DJ Kemppainnen (57), Ryan Dood (66) and Mason Starkey (81).
Iron Mountain didn’t figure in the team scoring in the girls division, with only Rediet Husing (59) and Natalia Brown (60) posting scores in Monday’s nine-hole match.
Led by co-medalist Grace Maki (47), the Flivvers won the match by just a stroke (226) over runner-up Marquette (227). West Iron was third with a team score of 287.
“(Maki) played great,” said Kingsford girls varsity golf coach Lisa Harry. “Overall, the team shot well for a first match. It got real chilly out there. I was impressed with the way they all played.”
Marquette’s Abby Luke also posted a 47 on the day to medal along with Maki.
Maki was aided in the team scoring for Kingsford by teammates Maggie Menghini (56), Bryonna Sanders (59) and Amanda Yu (64).
Scoring for West Iron were the foursome of Madison Berutti (55), Kya Dallavalle (61), Gracyn Melstrom (79) and Harlie Melstrom (92).
