SISU Ski Fest set for Ironwood on Saturday

IRONWOOD — Only a handful of spots remain open in some races for the SISU Ski Fest to be held in the Ironwood area this weekend.

Organizers said that as of Tuesday, 750 skiers are already registered, with the fullest races being the pair of 30-kilometer events. The 30K Skate had 35 spots left in its 400-skier field Tuesday and the 30K Classic having 20 spots left among its 180 capacity.

The 15K Classic and Skate allow 150 racers each and had plenty of spots left on Tuesday.

Registration online closes at 10 p.m. CST Friday or when the last spots have been taken, though the 5K Fun Ski will hold registration until 11 a.m. CST Saturday. Organizers also said there will be no refunds, transfers or deferrals.

Unseasonably warm temperatures and rain greatly reduced the early snow base, though all trails are now open and skiable with a few thin spots. Cold and snow have been forecast for this week, with race day above zero degrees.

Ironwood is an area enduring a COVID-19 surge and the event will require face masks on buses and in all indoor spaces. Those testing positive within the last week or experiencing symptoms of any illness are asked to remain home.
