CCHA names first Players of Week

DEEPHAVEN, Minn. — While Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech universities were playing a single exhibition game over the weekend, other Central Collegiate Hockey Association teams started their seasons.

The league thus announced its first Players of the Week with the restart of the CCHA.

Forward of the Week was bestowed upon Minnesota State-Mankato junior Nathan Smith after a five-point series at No. 1-ranked Massachusetts where the Mavericks won 2-0 and 6-3.

Ferris State junior Blake Evennou was named Defenseman of the Week after making the game-winning assist on Sunday’s concluding game in overtime vs. Miami.

The league’s Goaltender of the Week was Mankato senior Dryden McKay after making 18 saves for the season-opening shutout at No. 1 UMass.

Rookie of the Week was Ferris State freshman Bradley Marek, a Big Rapids native, who scored the go-ahead goal with 94 seconds left vs. Miami on Sunday. He had two points and one power play goal.
