Upper Peninsula all-star basketball games canceled again this year

ESCANABA — The Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame all-star basketball games will not be held this year due to several factors, including the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

That’s according to hall Executive Secretary Dennis Grall.

“Our planned venue was not available and an alternate venue that was contacted did not respond in a timely matter, making it too late to organize the event,” he said in a recent email.

The event was originally scheduled for June 13 at Marquette Senior High School, then canceled in early April, according to a report in the Escanaba Daily Press.

This marks the second consecutive year the game has been canceled.

“Pandemic limitations on crowd size and testing procedures were also not clear at the time the decision was made to cancel the game,” Grall added in his statement. “In addition, the original date selected for the game presented a conflict with another event.”

The future of the all-star games is scheduled to be discussed when the UPSHF Executive Council meets July 30.
