Niila Niemi, Ava Hares, Emerson Williams lead Ishpeming to Little League Major Division softball victory over Teal Lake Assisted Living, 7-6

MARQUETTE — Ishpeming scored the winning run in the bottom of the final inning to sneak past Teal Lake Assisted Living 7-6 in a Marquette County Major League softball game played the final week of May.

Niila Niemi threw five innings for the pitching win, helping her own cause by collecting two hits at the plate. Teammate Ava Hares went 3 for 3 and Emerson Williams was 2 for 2.

For Teal Lake, Mallory Young tossed four innings while only allowing two runs as she struck out eight. Teammate Adelyn Chapman supported her by going 2 for 2 and scoring twice, while Emma Hoffenberger also had two hits.

In another Major softball contest, Grace Granato struck out two and got the win while teammate Aly Robar fanned three during her turn on the rubber as Blue Sox opened its season with a 7-0 shutout of Edward Jones.

Robar and Liv Richards each went 2 for 2, both cracking a pair of doubles, in the winning effort.

Junior softball

Delaney Gladwell went 3 for 3 and scored three runs to help make Miya Frederickson the winning hurler as Cliffs Natural Resources blanked Ishpeming 9-0. Frederickson had seven strikeouts as teammate Megan Marker was 2 for 2 with two runs.

Taylor Jachovich led Ishpeming, going 2 for 2, both hits doubles.

Cliffs also shut down Ishpeming 20-0 as Marker got the pitching victory, fanning four and allowing three hits in three innings. Gladwell was 3 for 4 with a walk and four runs scored.

Minor baseball

Winning pitcher Lux Harris and teammate Aiden Taisto each went 3 for 3 with a triple as Tino’s fended off the Negaunee Township Fire Department 8-2. The winners’ Gunner Saari also had two hits.

Cooper Chapman and Evan Cardinal combined on the mound as Window Outfitters downed Select Realty 17-4. Each pitched two innings, Chapman striking out four while allowing just one run and Cardinals recording 5 K’s.

Window’s Cooper Thompson was 3 for 3, Chapman 2 for 2, Cardinal and Otto Thompson each 2 for 3 as Otto Thompson had a double.

Johnny Juntti and Axl Sarasin combined to pitch a one-hitter and lead Negaunee VFW to a 13-2 win over Meyer Family Vision. Jasper Nicholas hit a two-run single, while Nathan Harvala, Eli Daavettila, Kyle Rajal, Chase Black and Jake Cadotte each had hits, too.

Tino’s sped past Ishpeming KC 14-3 as winning pitcher Cooper LaPin joined teammates Landon Steele, Lux Harris, Manny Johnson and Parker Scott in all collecting two hits.

In another game, Window Outfitters took out Ishpeming KC 14-4.

Major baseball

Black Diamond Car Wash had a big week, winning twice and playing a third game to a tie.

Black Diamond beat Holiday 8-2 as Waylon Harvala had two hits and Griffin Leece a two-run double to support winning hurler Ty Niemi.

The Diamonds upended Ishpeming Elks 18-8 as Niemi had four hits and Harvala was among several players with multiple hits to support victorious pitcher Evan DellAngelo.

But Iron Range was able to pull out a 3-3 tie against Black Diamond as Harvala and Michael Warlick each tripled for the hard mineral team.

In another division game, the Negaunee Elks got by Ishpeming Elks 7-3 as Gaven Store got the pitching win as Store and teammates Tucker Taskila and Max Frustaglio each had two hits.

Killean Ryan rolled up 11 strikeouts while allowing just two hits as Holiday blew past Negaunee Elks 14-1. Kurt O’Brian went 3 for 3 and Mason Swenor hit a bases-clearing triple in the winning cause.

In another game, Iron Range Agency nipped Holiday 5-4.

Junior baseball

While details weren’t available, scores from this division included Guys Place over U.P. Rehab 9-7, Richardson Jewelers sneaking past Gwinn 15-13, U.P. Rehab downed Vierling 9-5 and Richardson tripling up Vierling 18-6.
