NEGAUNEE — On a strangely cool late June night that was more typical of football season, two Superiorland League teams put on a good show for the fans who came out to watch.

The Marquette County Mavericks jumped out to a three-run lead, but Coldwell Banker-Craig Heinonen gradually chipped away at its deficit before eventually emerging with a 5-4 win at the Irontown Field on Monday.

MC got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Starting pitcher Steve Hintsala started things off with a single and two batters later, he scored on a fielder’s choice by James Larsen II. Larsen came home to score on a fielding error and two batters later, C.J. Lepisto drove in a run to put the Mavericks up 3-0.

CBCH answered back, though, in its half of the inning. Jed Anderson scored on a base hit by starting pitcher Gavin Locke and then Steve Daavettila cranked a two-run homer over the right field fence to tie it at 3-3.

The Mavericks took the lead again in the fourth after Hintsala scored on a passed ball, maintaining that slim 4-3 advantage until the bottom of the sixth.

Gabe Daavettila started the sixth off with a walk, and two batters later he scored on a single by Bryce Brazeau. Brazeau later moved up to third on a wild pitch by reliever A.J. Suardini, then scored on another wild pitch to put CBCH up 5-4.

MC had a chance to tie things up in the seventh as Sam Prentice hit a two-out single and Aaron Adriano drew a walk, but the Mavericks couldn’t capitalize.

CBCH will play the Negaunee Blasters on Monday, while the Mavericks are off through the Fourth of July break, not playing until July 12.
