GWINN — The West Iron County Wykons boys tennis team defeated a short-handed Gwinn tennis squad on Wednesday at the GHS tennis courts.

The overall score was 7-1 for a Wykon victory. The Wykons took first, second and fourth singles and swept all the four doubles matches.

The lone point-winner for the Modeltowners was at third singles, junior John Detrick.

GHS Tennis Coach Dan Turecky noted: “John (Detrick) has really stepped up his game this year to become one of my top leaders both on and off the court. He’s an amazing person and tennis player.”

Coach Turecky also had praise for the visiting coach and the WIC team. Turecky stated: “Wykons Coach Joe Serbentes always seems to produce top-notch individual tennis players and continues a great ‘tennis tradition’ in Iron River. This year, he’s got a senior-dominated squad that could be very competitive for some tournament titles.”
