Miners sweep Dickinson County opponents; now 7-0

NEGAUNEE –A road trip proved successful for the Negaunee Miners boys tennis team Thursday.

First the Miners stopped in Kingsford and topped the host Flivvers, 7-1. Then the Negaunee squad traveled the short distance to Iron Mountain, blanking the Mountaineers, 8-0, to improve to 7-0 on the season.

About the Kingsford match, Negaunee tennis coach Kyle Saari commented: “Corbin (Marshall, No. 3 singles) has been super steady early for us. He’s someone who has paid his dues and has quietly worked hard over his career, and it’s awesome to see him having success.”

Regarding the Iron Mountain match, Saari said: “Luke (Syrjala, No. 2 singles) seemed to take his game up a notch today. There’s a lot of action on his serve and his game is well rounded for his age. “

His team is undefeated, but Saari says more work is needed: “We have a lot of things to work on yet doubleswise, but it’ll help once we find some chemistry and consistency there. It’s good to get Preston (Toutant, No. 1 doubles) back in the lineup.’
