River Shumate keys Finlandia men’s basketball team to 1st win of season over Gogebic, 94-87

HANCOCK — Republic-Michigamme High School graduate River Shumate played a key role in the Finlandia men’s basketball team earning its first victory of the season, a 94-87 home win over Gogebic Community College on Wednesday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

Shumate scored 14 points and dished out seven assists, hitting several key baskets.

He culminated a 10-2 Lions run with a 3-pointer to put Finlandia up 81-80 with 4:01 to go. Then he hit a bucket as part of another Finlandia comeback that made it 90-85 in favor of the Lions with 1:09 remaining.

Teammate Dylan Underwood finished with 31 points, including four triples, as he made three steals, pushing his career steal total to 131, second best in school history.

Marlen Williams scored 21 points and Sincere Key 20 to pace Gogebic.

Finlandia closes its season at 7 p.m. today at home against Riverland.
