Mariah Austin top scorer in Finlandia women’s basketball win over Bay College, 71-41

HANCOCK — A half-dozen area players played in an Upper Peninsula college matchup of Finlandia and Bay College on Wednesday evening.

Ishpeming High School graduate and Finlandia junior Mariah Austin led all scorers with 11 points as the Lions held off Bay 71-41.

Among her points, she hit a pair of free throws early in the second quarter that began an 11-0 run to put the game firmly in the Lions’ control.

Austin also made four rebounds, three assists and just one turnover in 21 minutes court time.

Senior teammate Bailey Froberg of L’Anse added seven points, six rebounds and three assists, while Finlandia junior Carsyn Osterman of Baraga scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Baraga junior teammate Martina Jahfetson also scored six points, pulling down five rebounds and making three assists and two steals. And Ishpeming junior Katie Loman didn’t score but did have a steal.

For Bay (4-9), Gwinn sophomore Brooke Mannor scored six points on a pair of 3-pointers and blocked a shot.

Finlandia led 16-9 after one quarter, extending it to 34-18 by halftime and 52-27 after three quarters.

The Lions’ regular season is complete at 5-1 as their final scheduled game against Bryant & Stratton set for March 12 has been canceled.
