Karlie Patron, Korey Kaukola lead Bay softball team to 2-1 record in Minnesota

ROSEMOUNT, Minn. — Two Marquette County west end graduates played big roles as Bay College split a pair of softball games at the Irish Dome on Friday.

Westwood High School product Karlie Patron allowed just three hits, one unearned run and two walks while striking out 10 in Bay’s 7-1 opening-game victory over Central Lakes College.

In the nightcap won by Dakota County 7-6, Ishpeming High grad Korey Kaukola hit a two-out, RBI line-drive single in the second inning that gave Bay a 5-2 lead.

Patron went the distance in this game, too, allowing four earned runs on nine hits and two walks as she struck out three.

On Saturday, the Norse were scheduled to play two more in the Irish Dome before the second game was called due to injuries depleting the roster of Rainy River Community and Technical College.

Before it was called, though, Bay won the opener 20-5 as Kaukola hit a two-out RBI double capping off a six-run rally in the third inning that put the Norse ahead 10-0.

Patron again pitched the entire five innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and a walk as she struck out six. Kaukola finished with two hits.

Bay (4-15) is off until April 9, when the Norse travel to the metro Milwaukee area to play six games in just three days. Milwaukee Area Technical College provides the opposition in the first four games, with Bryant & Stratton College the final two.
