Ishpeming products Karlie Patron, Korey Kaukola lead Bay College softball

RHINELANDER, Wis. — Westwood High School graduate Karlie Patron started four games in two days for the Bay College softball team on Tuesday on Wednesday, while an Ishpeming High School product, Korey Kaukola, produced significantly for the Norse offense throughout.

Unfortunately, Bay lost all four games to Madison College and Lake Region State in games played indoors at the Hodag Dome. Madison won 11-3 and Lake Region won 4-1 on Tuesday, while Lake Region prevailed 6-4 and Madison won 12-9 on Wednesday.

In the opener Tuesday vs. Madison, Patron allowed seven runs on eight hits as she walked five in three innings, while in the nightcap, she went the distance, allowing four runs, three earned, while walking two and striking out five.

To begin Wednesday, Patron went five innings, allowing only three earned runs among six total runs given up on five hits and four walks. In the final game, she started and went two innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits.

In the first game Tuesday, Kaukola put Bay ahead by leading off the second inning with a home run to left field.

In the opener Wednesday, she hit another homer to center, getting her team’s first run to make it 3-1, again in the second inning. She also walked in a last-chance rally in the seventh where she was stranded representing the tying run.

And in the two-day finale, Kaukola hit an RBI double in another last-gasp rally in the seventh that produced six runs after the Norse trailed 12-3.

Kaukola also pitched the final 1 1/3 innings of the finale.

Bay (2-14) plays Friday and next Saturday in a Region 13 Crossover that again will mean doubleheaders on back-to-back days indoors.
