Westwood graduate and Bay College softball pitcher Karlie Patron a tough-luck loser in Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Westwood High School graduate and Bay College freshman Karlie Patron went the distance on the pitching rubber as the Norse softball team lost 5-1 to Eastern Florida State College on Thursday afternoon.

Patron allowed just two earned runs on seven hits and two walks as she struck out two in her six innings.

Bay wrapped up its six-day, nine-game spring trip to Florida and is now 2-10. The Norse’s next games are doubleheaders on March 16-17 at the Hodag Dome in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Each day, Bay will face Madison College and Lake Region State College.

On Thursday, Bay took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Patron kept the home team scoreless until the bottom of the fourth.

The Norse had a chance for a bigger lead, but a pair of leadoff singles in the first inning and another leadoff single in the second stranded runners in scoring position each inning. Then in the third, Bay’s Sarah Wynn singled to score Escanaba product Lexi Challier from second base, though the Norse still stranded two more runners.

Eastern Florida then scored three in the fourth and twice more in the fifth, with a Bay error aiding each inning.

Bay made one more rally in the seventh, when Bark River-Harris product Riley Arndt and Gladstone product Kaitlyn Hardwick singled, but the Norse stranded them, too.
