MINNEAPOLIS — Republic-Michigamme High School product River Shumate scored 11 points but it wasn’t enough to avert Finlandia’s 99-62 loss at North Central College on Saturday.

Teammate Joe Heinonen, a graduate of Superior Central, scored two points and shared the team high with six rebounds.

The Lions, who fell to 0-5, trailed 48-32 at halftime. In the first half, neither Shumate nor Heinonen scored, though Shumate had three assists and Heinonen three rebounds in those 20 minutes.

Danny Zuchak led Finlandia scorers with 13 points, while Noah Prestia had 11 and Dylan Underwood nine along with six rebounds.

Micah Filer paced North Central (8-5) with 21 points.

The Lions host Lakeland at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Paavo Nurmi Center in Hancock before traveling to Ironwood to play Gogebic Community College at 4 p.m. EST Saturday.
