River Shumate hits pair of 3-pointers in Finlandia men’s basketball loss at Bay College, 78-72

ESCANABA — Republic-Michigamme High School product River Shumate scored six points and pulled down two rebounds as Finlandia lost 78-72 at Bay College in a college men’s basketball game played Wednesday.

Shumate’s points came on a pair of 3-pointers, one in each half. His second one came with 6:14 to go to tie the game 62-62. From there, the teams traded leads several times until Bay (2-9) wrested control for good when Matt Wagner made a layup with 4:03 remaining to give the Norse a 67-66 lead.

Superior Central product and Lions teammate Joe Heinonen didn’t score but pulled in three rebounds and made a steal in 17 minutes court time.

Wagner led all scorers with 24 points, while Finlandia (0-7), which led 40-39 at halftime, was paced by Jamhad Hines with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Finlandia remains on the road in the Upper Peninsula with a game at 4 p.m. EST Saturday at Gogebic Community College in Ironwood.
