Ishpeming graduate Mariah Austin leads Finlandia women’s basketball team past Bay College, 69-50

ESCANABA — With the help of several area players, the Finlandia women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to 13 games with a 69-50 victory at Bay de Noc Community College on Wednesday.

The Lions, 2-0 this season after finishing the 2019-20 campaign with 11 straight wins, led just 17-15 after one quarter before extending their advantage to 33-22 by halftime. They kept a double-digit lead, 51-39, after three quarters before winning by 19.

Ishpeming junior guard Mariah Austin scored 12 points for Finlandia, adding two rebounds, as teammate Katie Lundeen led all scorers with 17 points as she made 8 of 10 shots from the field and pulled in five rebounds.

Four other area players also scored for the Lions. They included L’Anse senior Bailey Froberg with nine points, all on a trio of 3-pointers, as she made a game-high three steals.

Baraga products Carsyn Osterman and Martina Jahfetson each had seven points. Osterman, a junior, also had game highs of seven rebounds and four assists while adding two steals, and Jahfetson, a sophomore, had two assists and made a triple.

Ishpeming junior Katie Loman scored four points, pulled down three rebounds and made two steals.

For Bay (1-3), Gwinn sophomore Brooke Mannor didn’t score but did have an assist in 19 minutes.
